A customer walks in wheeling an ebike: "it turns on, but the motor doesn't push like it used to, and a red light blinks now and then." No strange noise, no clear error on the display. This is exactly the kind of case where a proper approach to ebike motor diagnostics separates a twenty-minute diagnosis from half a day lost pulling things apart on a hunch. A few years ago, experience and a screwdriver were enough. Today the motor speaks a digital language - error codes, usage logs, firmware versions, torque parameters - and every brand speaks it differently. Bosch, Shimano Steps, Yamaha, Brose, Bafang: same basic architecture (motor, pedal sensor, battery, display), but four or five different software ecosystems, four or five different cables and adapters, four or five manufacturer accounts to keep current. The point isn't to own every tool for every brand - it's knowing which brands actually walk through your door and gearing up accordingly. If your territory skews Bosch and Shimano, those are the two stations worth doing properly, with licenses and cables kept current, rather than five tools used badly. Dedicated diagnostic benches: what they actually measure
Beyond manufacturer software, a dedicated ebike diagnostic bench adds what the brand tool alone can't see: battery voltage and remaining capacity under load (not just the percentage the display reports, which tends to run optimistic as cells age), continuity and resistance through the wiring between battery, motor and display, torque output at different assist levels checked against manufacturer spec, and how the pedal/speed sensor behaves under simulated pedaling. These are the measurements that let you tell a battery problem (often a paid replacement once the cell count passes a certain number of cycles) apart from a motor or wiring problem (often covered under warranty) - and the financial difference for the customer is significant, which is exactly why the diagnosis needs to be solid, not a hunch.
The customer report: transparency that sells
The value of diagnostics isn't just finding the fault - it's documenting it so the customer understands it and the manufacturer accepts it. A useful report includes: the error codes read from the official tool, translated into plain language; the bench measurements (battery voltage, torque, wiring continuity) set against reference values; the motor and display firmware version at the time of the check; and an operational conclusion - what gets replaced, what's covered under warranty, what isn't and why. Handed over in writing, this report does three things at once: it speeds up the warranty claim with the manufacturer (who asks for exactly this data), it justifies the cost of the diagnostic check when it isn't covered, and it builds trust with the customer, who sees a traceable diagnosis instead of a verbal "we checked it, the motor needs replacing."
