Every season ends the same way in the back of the shop: a box of punctured inner tubes, a pile of worn-out tyres, and increasingly, a dead eBike battery nobody quite knows what to do with. Tossing it all in with general waste used to be the easy way out, but it isn't legal and it isn't practical anymore — anyone running a workshop knows tubes, tyres and electrical components count as special waste, with traceability rules that can't just be skipped. Tubes, tyres and batteries: why they're special waste
Vulcanised rubber, inner tubes, tyres and composite materials don't belong in ordinary municipal collection: they're classified as non-hazardous special waste (lithium batteries, on the other hand, are hazardous waste), and handling them properly means routing them through authorised operators with some form of traceable record — even a simple log of what left the shop, when, and to whom. This isn't paperwork for its own sake. Manufacturer recycling programmes do the heavy lifting
The good news is that finding an outlet for these materials is largely a solved problem — manufacturers got there first. Brands like Schwalbe and Vittoria run take-back and recycling programmes for end-of-life tubes and tyres, built specifically for the shops and workshops that sell and fit their products: dedicated collection, materials reused in new rubber or other components, and no need for a shop to invent a disposal channel from scratch. It's worth asking your distributor or sales rep which programmes are active in your area — pickup is often bundled with supply, or at least discounted, and it's a genuinely useful talking point when a customer questions why a quality tube costs more than a cheap disposable one.
eBike batteries: the part that carries the most weight
EBikes now account for roughly three quarters of the bikes coming into workshops for repair, and their batteries — often several hundred Wh — are the trickiest part of the whole sustainability picture. A lithium battery at end of life is WEEE, full stop, and needs to go through authorised collection points or the manufacturer's/distributor's take-back scheme — never left sitting in a corner of the storeroom "for later." That's a fire risk as much as a regulatory obligation. With eBike warranties already flagged as workshops' number-one management headache in 2026, end-of-life battery handling deserves the same rigour as a warranty claim: a written procedure, a named person responsible, no improvising.
Setting up the flow without losing time to it
In practice, it works best to split things into three streams from day one: tubes and tyres headed to manufacturer programmes, general rubber going to an authorised waste handler, and a separate, clearly marked, closed container for dead batteries. Assign the responsibility to one specific person on the team rather than leaving it to "whoever remembers," and keep a simple note of when each batch left and who took it — that's the first thing an inspection asks for, and it's exactly the evidence you'd want on hand if a customer ever disputes what happened to a battery. This isn't extra work bolted onto the daily service load; it's part of the service, on the same level as a chain replacement done properly.
