What the Digital Product Passport actually is
The DPP is a digital file that travels with a product across its whole life cycle: components, materials, production date, maintenance and repairability information, parts traceability. Repairability stops being optional
The most concrete point for a workshop is that ESPR puts repairability at the center of product design. Manufacturers will have to design with disassembly, long-term parts availability and accessible technical documentation in mind from the start. That's genuinely good news for anyone who lives off service work: lead times on some components currently run 340 to 700 days, in some cases up to 24 months, and the 2022 overstock crisis — 40% of ordered products never actually delivered — taught the whole supply chain how fragile the parts pipeline really is. Regulation that forces repairability into the design stage is, long term, an ally for the workshop, not an obstacle. The short-term risk is that the transition gets messy: passport and non-passport bikes on the same stand, manufacturers moving at very different speeds, customers asking for information the shop doesn't yet have a way to retrieve.

There's no operational deadline for a workshop to circle on the calendar — the DPP obligation falls on manufacturers — but service managers can start positioning themselves to make the most of it. First, keep clean traceability of what you fit: brand, part code, date. That's the foundation any digital passport read in-store will eventually hook into. Second, stop treating a bike's history as an administrative afterthought and start treating it as service data — useful for quotes, for eBike warranty claims (already the industry's number-one management headache), and for keeping customers coming back.
